Asteroid Apophis Set for Once-in-a-Generation Close Flyby in 2029

Astronomers around the world are preparing for one of the most extraordinary celestial events of the coming decade, as near-Earth asteroid 99942 Apophis is set to make an exceptionally close approach to our planet on April 13, 2029.

First discovered in 2004, Apophis initially made headlines when early orbital calculations suggested a small but concerning chance of impact with Earth. While continued observations have since ruled out any collision risk for at least the next century, the asteroid’s upcoming flyby remains one of the closest ever predicted for an object of its size.


Measuring approximately 340 metres across, Apophis will pass within roughly 32,000 kilometres of Earth’s surface — closer than many geostationary satellites that orbit our planet. At its nearest point, the asteroid will be visible to the naked eye from parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia, appearing as a fast-moving point of light crossing the night sky.


The event offers scientists an unprecedented opportunity to study how Earth’s gravity may influence the asteroid’s structure and trajectory. Researchers are particularly interested in whether tidal forces during the flyby could trigger surface landslides or alter Apophis’ rotation, changes that could provide valuable insights into the internal composition of so-called “rubble pile” asteroids.


Space agencies, including NASA and ESA, are already planning extensive observation campaigns for the 2029 encounter. Ground-based telescopes and radar systems will track Apophis in real time, gathering data that could improve our understanding of asteroid dynamics and inform future planetary defence strategies.

While the asteroid poses no threat to Earth, its close approach represents a rare chance to observe a large near-Earth object up close without leaving the planet. For astronomers and skywatchers alike, Apophis’ 2029 flyby is shaping up to be a truly once-in-a-generation astronomical spectacle.
